Air source vs ground source

Date Created: 2023/10/21

Ground source heat pumps pump cold water into the ground where it warms to bring the heat up to the heat pump, (it doesn’t pump the refrigerant into the ground). It takes advantage of the fact that a few metres down, the ground is at an almost constant temperature of around 10°C.

Air source heat pumps pump the cold refrigerant out of the house and into a ‘radiator’ where it absorbs heat from the air, with the help of fans. The amount of heat that air contains, it’s specific heat, is much lower than soil, but the fans bring a lot of air into contact with the radiator.
