Dividing using halve and halve

When dividing two numbers, you get the same answer if you first double them, or halve them. In fact you get the same answer if you multiply or divide both numbers by any third number, provided you do the same thing to both numbers.

Example: 16 ÷ 5 = 32 ÷ 10 = 3.2 (doubling both)

Example: 54 ÷ 18 = 6 ÷ 2 = 3 (since 54 and 18 are both in the nine times table you should spot that they can be divided by 9)
