How old is Sarah?

You may have seen puzzles like this before. It is a simple example of how you can translate a problem into an equation and then solve it.
The first step is to pick a letter to represent the thing we want to know, Sarah's age. Let's call it s. Now we have to translate the statements in the puzzle into algebra.
The first sentence tells us that her mother's age is 3s.
What about the second sentence, which is about 4 years ago.
4 years ago Sarah's age was s - 4, and her mother's age was 3s - 4.
The second sentence tells us that 4 times Sarah's age 4 years ago equals
her mother's age then, so we have our equation, a pretty easy one:
