Low powers of the first few numbers
It can be really helpful to memorise the first few powers, not to replace the use of your calculator for numerical questions, but because they occur in a lot of algebra questions. If you recognise that a number is a square, for example, then it can help you decide how to deal with an expression.| n | 2n | 3n | 5n |
| 1 | 2 | 3 | 5 |
| 2 | 4 | 9 | 25 |
| 3 | 8 | 27 | 125 |
| 4 | 16 | 81 | 625 |
| 5 | 32 | 243 | 3125 |
| 6 | 64 | 729 | |
| 7 | 128 | ||
| 8 | 256 | ||
| 9 | 512 | ||
| 10 | 1024 |
Of course, if you know the powers of 2 then you also know powers of 4 and 8. For example, 83 = (23)3=29=512
You are also advised by some boards to know the squares of the first 15 integers. You should know the first 10 already.
