Probability - what is it?

When events are random we assign a number to these events called the probability. It is the likelihood that the event will happen.

First we can clarify some terms: an experiment can lead to a number of outcomes. The sample space is the set of all possible outcomes of the experiment. A particular event that we are interested in is also a set of outcomes, a subset of the sample space.
