Simple sequences
It is important not to be confused by the notation. In a sequence it is most common to use a subscripted number to denote the term of the sequence.
So for example, a1 is the first term and a100 is the 100th. Do not confuse these with powers.
This notation is taken further, as you could have variable subscripts, such as an+1 which means the (n+1)th term.
So a52 means the 5th term in the sequence squared.
