Carbon offsetting

The idea is that it is acceptable to add carbon dioxide to the atmosphere if at the same time you take some other action which removes the same amount of carbon dioxide.

In my view this belongs in the greenwashing category although it is widely offered, even to the public, as a way of neutralising the carbon cost of some action.
